How to forward your ports for AssaultCube (and other programs as well), and setting a static IP address
Alright faggots, here's how we forward our ports. First, go to the command prompt. If you don't know how to get there, (on XP) go to the start menu, click on Run..., and type 'cmd', minus the parentheses. You should be given a DOS-looking window like this.
Now, type in ipconfig and hit Return. It should show some information, including IP address and Default Gateway. Write those down, as you will be needing them.
Open Firefox (IE is for faggots), and type in your Default Gateway where you normally type in websites. My Default Gateway is 192.168.2.1, so I type that in. This will bring you to your router. If it asks for a username and password to edit any of the settings while you're in there, try something like "admin" for the username and password or "password" for the password.
Anywho, if you're on a Belkin router, click the link to Virtual Servers. If you don't have this link, look for something about port forwarding, or, if you can't find anything like that, just go through the links until you come across a page like this.
Assuming you have found this page, copy down all the information I have for Assault Cube, like this.
For the IP address, you need to set it to the IP that you wrote down earlier from using the command prompt. If you are on a wireless network, you will need to set a static IP, unless you have already done so, or else you will have to repeat the entire port forwarding process. To do this (on XP), right click on one of the connection icons in your system tray, and click Open Network Connections. The image below shows me with the Network Connections window already open, as well as where to click to get there.
Right click on the icon of whatever internet connection you're using, and click Properties. From there, scroll down and locate the item called Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). I believe on Vista you'll have IPv6 and IPv4; click on IPv4. From there, click on the Properties button.
Now, you should have a window like this.
Select Use the following IP address: and Use the following DNS server addresses:.
For the IP address, enter whatever IP address you would like, assuming you know how IP's work. Basically, it's the same as your default gateway, other than the very last number, which normally can be anything from 2 to 254.
When you click on Subnet mask, it should automatically enter one in.
Default Gateway is the same as it was in the command prompt; unless you buy a new router, your default gateway will never change.
Preferred DNS server is the same as your default gateway, and you don't need to enter anything for your alternate DNS server.
Once you've entered all that information, click OK, close out of the other window, and you have a static IP. :) However, if you go over to a friend's house or go onto another network, you'll need to reset what you just did to obtain all the IP crap automatically, or, even though your computer will tell you that you're connected, you won't be able to access the internet.
