Skype is a piece of software that lets you use your computer ( regardless of you OS) to communicate with anyone else who has Skype for free. You can communicate by text chat, voice calls, and video chatting. Skype will allow you to do any of these with multiple people at a time free of charge, HOWEVER IF YOU WISH TO COMMUNICATE WITH LANDLINES AND CELLULAR PHONES you will have to prepay for "Skype credits", as far as we can tell the rates are very low. Our opinion on Skype is that it's text chat is better than AIM's. Skype's voice chat is as clear as a telephone (depending on your internet connection). The video chat is (we at illneverforgetit.com agree) better than ichat ( we have some apple devices).
Overall this piece of software is perfect for anyone that want to talk to folks they know, and I repeat IT'S FREE (lest you're going to call a real phone). IF you have relatives living next door or on the next continent Skype will go above and beyond the call of duty (depending on you internet connection and/or webcam). Definite must have.
(Windows and Unix(Macintosh) fanboys may stop reading now)
Linux, as it is usually referred to is an OS (Operating System) (like Windows and Macintosh) that is open source (free to use, edit, give away, NOT sell) and (most distributions are) multitudes more useful than Macintosh and Windows.
A lot of people are often intimidated by Linux, this is mostly because most people aren't computer experts AND/OR they're so attached to Windows or Macintosh (some geeks get attached to one of those like normal people get attached to puppies, they're called fanboys/fangirls and often cannot be swayed from their opinion. However someones opinion is there own and they're entitled to it.
Linux isn't actually an OS at all, it's a kernel, and that's just a piece of an operating system, it just happens to be one of the more difficult pieces to make. Linux just happens to ba an open source kernel that's does a seriously good job, hence all of the amazing OS's that utilize it.
Linux comes in more flavors than we can hope to keep up on, so here is a link to a site that keeps track on most Linux Distributions
Some of more popular distros are Ubuntu, Fedora, Puppy, Moon, Android (yep), Free BSD, and Mint
(This page is being made in Linux)
Cooliris is a browser add-on (browser to add-on is like cake to butter cream icing) that turns your screen into a 3-D wall for photos and videos from some of the most popular photo sites on the Internet. It's completely free, and you can become a developer if you wish.
A wall of photos slide show doesn't sound impressive but Cooliris takes it to a whole new level with customizable features and even searching the wall itself. You could read about it all day as we could rave about it all day but neither of us are willing to do that, so here is a link for demos made by the cooliris people themselves.
Cooliris is not only available for desktop computers, but for a few mobile devices as well. Check it out, you won't regret or forget it.
Kdenlive is an open source movie editor that is almost an exact replica of Sony Vegas, the difference being is that Kdenlive is for Linux and Macintosh OS's, there is no port for Windows.
We use Kdenlive for our videos and we think you'll find that's it's very easy to use with amazing results being produced with it. there's a lot of documentation on it and all you have to do is look around and about for it. If you've never used movie editing software OR you're an absolute pro the Kdenlive is a free alternative to Sony Vegas. However Kdenlive has more features available than Sony Vegas does so Kdenlive is also the smarter choice. Don't get ripped off when you wanna edit a motion picture, get Kdenlive
(Linux Multi Media Studio)
LMMS is a fully equipped multi media studio (insert sarcasm) that is compatible with the popular Fruity Loops Studio, You can edit audio in virtually any way and even make your own music within it. The only thing deceiving thing about it's name is that
LMMS IS FOR LINUX AND WINDOWS.
Other than having the word Linux in it's name, that's the only weird thing about this program. If music is what you're into the give LMMS a run around.
(GNU Image Manipulation Program)
Yes it's called GIMP, and if you've ever read anything else about GIMP you know that's it truly is anything other than gimpy. It comes with everything you need to do anything with photos, and while it not quite the new Adobe Photoshop , Gimp can do more than iPhoto AND Picasa combined. Oh! and did we mention it WORKS ON WINDOWS, MACINTOSH, AND LINUX? Well, now you know that GIMP is a great (and open source) way to go.
(UK based music streaming service founded by Swedish people)
Spotify is a music streaming service founded in 2008 that became available for the USA in November of 2011. Currently several operating systems have software able to assess it, and it's available in several parts of the world. What makes Spotify different from things such as Pandora is that Spotify lets you listen to exactly what you want to listen, not just suggestions. It has limited commercial interruptions (none at all if you pay a fee) that don't last very long. Spotify will even synchronize to an Apple iPod (and probably several other devices) and add all the music you already have into a library that is yours alone, you may use facebook to create and login to Spotify. It is through all these simple and amazing features that has put Spotify on the spot!
